DESCRIPTION:This ride will be led by Ian Dunckley & tail-ended by Graham Maile….\n… with Ian trying something new: an optional WhatsApp group to share photos & feedback \nThe ride\nOur departure point is BP Childerley Gate\, just a few miles from Cambridge. Heading west into Bedford\, we pass through Longstowe\, Gamlingay\, Blunham\, Willingham & Cople on our way to breakfast at the Shuttleworth Café (menu here). The outward journey is ~30 miles\nLeaving the café we retrace our steps on a couple of short sections before branching off to Great Barford and heading cross-country to Riseley and on to the B645 where we turn east again. DESCRIPTION:Special thanks to Mark Fox for stepping in when a gap appeared in our Sunday ride rota.With Keith Curtis as his tail gunner\, Mark now leads on Sunday 2nd March\, and following a successful recce ride has provided the description below\n \nOur departure point is BP Newmarket Road in Cambridge\, from where we head to Six Mile Bottom & Bartlow. It’s then east to Steeple Bumpstead  & south to Wethersfield before turning east again to Sible Hedingham  for breakfast at the Corner Café. After breakfast we head north to Clare and Stradishall\, then wend our way westwards across to Stetchworth to pick up the A1303 just outside Newmarket for a quick blast to Stow-cum-Quy where the ride concludes.\nThe 77-mile ride features a good selection of country roads\, with everything very suitable for an enjoyable early spring ride – whatever the weather! Due to space constraints at the breakfast stop – limit is a maximum of 10 riders including lead & tail \n

The route initially takes us through Barley\, then heads south through Dassels to Ware\, where we turn eastwards through Much Hadham & Hatfield Heath before turning north to Takeley. We pass to the north of Stansted Airport before reaching our breakfast stop \nUnfortunately there won’t be time for anyone to try out the driving range or 9-hole golf course before we head back through Thaxted\, Dunmow & Blake End\, turning north towards our final destination at Fourwentways services\, passing through Great Bardfield\, Moor End & Bartlow on the way \nThis ride takes us along predominantly country roads (a couple of which are single track with passing places)\, and there is a possibility that there will be some mud on the surface; depending on weather conditions in the preceding days. \nThe total distance covered is 90 miles. DESCRIPTION:We’re very pleased to welcome Damon l’Anson of Blazing Trails Tours as our guest speaker: from despatch rider to adventure tour guide\, few can have enjoyed such a varied motorcycling career! This Members Evening is for anyone who has nurtured dreams of a biking trip in distant lands… \nDamon worked with bikes since he was 17\, as a despatcher\, mechanic & bike journalist. Involved in the launch of RiDE Magazine\, he became its deputy editor before moving to edit Performance Bikes. In 2002 he went freelance\, first as road test editor of Bike Magazine and later specialising in adventure touring. He has ridden on four continents and in over 30 countries. In 2005 Damon made a 16\,000km ‘lap’ of India on an indigenous 150cc bike for a Bike Magazine series and the following year returned on a Yamaha XT660-R to set a solo bike altitude record  at 18\,743ft. In 2006\, he entered and won the high-altitude\, seven-day Raid-de-Himalaya and has been working with Blazing Trails Tours ever since \n“Blazing Trails run a number of tours in Asia\, Africa and occasionally Europe. DESCRIPTION:Starting from BP Arrington near Wimpole\, Mark Fox & Graham Maile shepherd this ride west through Dunton and into Ashwell\, then cross the A505 to Sandon & ride south through Walkern towards Watton-at-Stone. Turning east to Dane End & the wonderfully named Nasty\, they emerge on the A10 and Pearce’s Café & Farm Shop\nAfter breakfast it’s across Puckeridge then through Little Hadham to Clavering. DESCRIPTION:SORRY – this event has been postponed until April\nWe kick off our 2025 social calendar on Thursday 16th January with a presentation by Peter Riley from Helite UK\, the premier manufacturer of motorcycle airbags. This Members Evening takes place at the customary venue: Over Community Centre\, starting at 7:30pm \nHelite was founded in 2002 in Dijon\, France by Gérard Thévenot\, an engineer specialising in fluid mechanics and a passionate fan of light aeronautics. Thévenot wanted to create personal protective equipment for high-risk sports by offering airbags adapted to the needs of motorcyclists\, horse riders & cyclists. The high accident rate in these pursuits led to the first patent for personal protection airbags. \nWe will learn in detail about how the airbag system works\, which parts of your body are protected\, how long it takes to inflate and what it is like to ride with an airbag. There will also be guidance on choosing the most appropriate model from the range. \nWe’ve allowed time for a Q&A session – so please come armed with your questions! If you already own a motorcycle airbag\, please do consider attending so you can share your experience with your fellow CAM members. \nYou are welcome to bring guests – please assist with the room booking and seating arrangements by emailing us at events@cambsiam.org.uk if you plan on attending!

SUMMARY:Sunday ride to the Watch Office
DESCRIPTION:Aviation has been a recurring theme in 2024’s busy ride schedule\, and it’s one to which ride leader Graham Maile & tail-ender Peter Grant return to for our final ride of the year. Graham has organised a visit to the Watch Office Bar & Kitchen\, a Grade II listed building which served as the operations hub for RAF Alconbury during World War II. Note that the Kitchen has requested pre-orders\, so please specify your choice from the brunch menu when requesting your place. Graham outlines the route as follows – \nWe start from a new departure point: the Shell petrol station just outside Fenstanton. Following the briefing we cross Fenstanton before turning right to skirt St Ives and pick up the A1123 to Bluntisham & Earith. We then follow B-roads through Pidley\, Warboys & the Riptons to Alconbury Hill. A short ride south on the old Great North Road takes us to Alconbury Weald and breakfast at the Watch Office \nWith breakfast despatched it’s back to the bikes: we pass under the A1 and through Alconbury to begin a loop west through Old Weston & Kimbolton before turning for the Perrys and the southern shore of Grafham Water before reaching the A1 at Buckden. We finish our ride with a hop north on the A1 to Brampton Hut Services. DESCRIPTION:Given the tempestuous weather\, and following advice from Cambridgeshire Constabulary (who provide a safety escort for the ride)\, the organizers of the Cambridge Bikers Christmas Toy Run have reluctantly taken the decision that the ride will NOT take place on Sunday 8th December as had been planned. The CAM ride-in\, which was scheduled for 8:30am\, is also now CANCELLED \nIt’s obvious disappointing that this is the second year running that the Grinch has stolen the Christmas Toy Run. However\, when this happened last year the event was rescheduled to Easter\, making for a colourful and well-attended replacement. DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to announce that Martin Munday\, one of the IAM Examiners who conducts Advanced Rider tests for CAM\, will be present at our Members & Associates evening on Thursday 17th October at 7.30pm at Over Community Centre. His Q&A Meet the Examiner session will be preceded by the launch of CAM’s all-new Members Map. We will also celebrate successes in the Advanced Rider test with presentations to our newest full Members \nMartin Munday was an officer in the Metropolitan Police for 31 years. He served in Traffic Division for 10 years\, attaining Advanced Class 1 classification on both cars & motorcycles. He spent 15 years in the Special Escort Group\, providing high-profile escorts for the royal family\, government officials and visiting heads of state. The Special Escort Group also delivers armed car escorts for high value materials and high-risk prisoners \nMartin has been a member of the IAM since 1997. He became a National Observer for both cars and motorcycles in 2017\, has been an Advanced Car Examiner since 2020 and an Advanced Motorcycle Examiner since 2021 \nMeet the Examiner is an opportunity for Associates to meet Martin\, find out how the Advanced Rider test is conducted and what he will be looking for during it… and to dispel any myths or preconceived ideas which could work to the disadvantage of test candidates \nWhile the Q & A session is primarily aimed at Associates\, this event is open to all and Martin suggests that any Observers present may well pick up useful insights which they can incorporate into their training programs. Full Members are of course welcome\, especially those who have recently passed the Advanced Rider test and may be able to share their experience \nPlease use this link if you would like to attend.
